Jobs-to-be-Done interviews
We conducted Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) interviews with potential users to better understand their needs and also collected some data via a simple survey. Here is what we've learned from it.
We've interviewed 10 potential users who were recently looking for feedback on their projects. Here are the key insights:
- Users want to get feedback from either their potential customers or experts in their field. Not just from friends or random people.
- It's really hard to find trustworthy feedback from reliable sources that have an incentive to help you improve.
- Most of the feedback they receive on X, Reddit, or from friends is not actionable, shallow, or too general.
- Ideally, there should be multiple people providing feedback, not just one person. This way it's more reliable.
- Some users use ChatGPT to analyze feedback and formulate action items. But feedback from ChatGPT is not helpful and not trustworthy.
- Users want to pay for feedback from experts but they don't know where to find them or it's too expensive.
Here is how we used FigJam to organize notes from the interviews:
Survey insights
We also conducted a simple survey via Tally to collect some data on how users are currently looking for feedback and what tools they are using. Here are the key questions we asked and the insights we've gathered:
How do you usually request feedback about your website? Respondents primarily request feedback through Reddit, friends and family, social media platforms like X and LinkedIn, Discord servers, Google Forms, and in-app feedback forms.
What results did you expect to get by asking for feedback? Respondents expected to receive insights into UX, design, bugs, and user experiences to improve their product and validate their assumptions.
What is the hardest thing about getting feedback? Why is it hard? The hardest thing about getting feedback is finding enough people who are willing and knowledgeable to provide reliable, quality, and trustworthy feedback, as many lack the time, incentive, or interest, leading to disappointment, conflicting responses, or untrustworthy advice.
Why is it important for you to request feedback about your website? Requesting feedback is crucial for identifying areas of improvement, optimizing for better user experience and conversion, and ensuring alignment with user needs to achieve product-market fit.
Larger context
We also identified a common pattern of how users are trying to reach their ultimate goal of building a successful product and how feedback fits into this process. This helped us to understand the context in which users are looking for feedback and how we can help them achieve their goals.
